Central Air Conditioning Repair in the Bronx

Ephraim Heating & Air repairs central air conditioning across the Bronx: split systems with an outdoor condenser in the yard, on a roof or on wall brackets and an indoor coil on a furnace or air handler, and ductless mini splits with wall heads in each room.

AC repair covers these parts:

  • Run capacitors and dual capacitors
  • Contactors and the low voltage wiring that pulls them in
  • Condenser fan motors and fan blades
  • Compressor start components and overloads
  • Evaporator coils, condenser coils and coil cleaning
  • Condensate drains, traps, float switches and condensate pumps
  • Blower motors and air handler controls
  • Thermostats and wiring
  • Mini split wall heads, fan motors, sensors and boards

AC Not Cooling in the Bronx: What Usually Failed

If the indoor fan runs and the air is warm, look at the outdoor unit. A condenser that hums without its fan turning has a weak capacitor or a seized fan motor. A condenser that is silent has lost power at the breaker or disconnect, or its contactor is not pulling in. If both units run and the air is still warm, the coils are dirty or iced, or the system is low on charge.

Condensers on Bronx roofs and in narrow side yards between attached houses work in hot, tight spots. Leaves, dryer lint and trash packed against the coil make the unit run hot and trip on high pressure, and the capacitor wears out sooner.

Frozen Coils and Water Leaks

Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil means too little warm air is crossing the coil, or the charge is low. A clogged filter, a blower motor that slowed down or closed registers are the usual causes. Shut the cooling off and let the fan run until the ice melts.

Water dripping from a ceiling or out of a closet is almost always the condensate drain. Slime clogs the trap, the pan overflows, and an indoor unit with no float switch keeps running. A failed condensate pump does the same thing on a unit that drains uphill.

Ductless Mini Split Repair in the Bronx

Mini splits are common where there was never ductwork. Wall heads that drip, blink a code, blow without cooling or shut off after a few minutes usually have a clogged drain, a dirty coil and blower wheel, a failed sensor or a board fault. The outdoor unit has the same capacitors, fan motors and coils as a central condenser.

Window and through-wall units are covered on the window AC repair page. For heat, see boiler repair and furnace repair in the Bronx. Service covers West Farms, Van Nest and the rest of the Bronx service area.

AC Repair Questions

Why is my AC not cooling?

When the fan blows but the air is warm, check the outdoor unit first. If its fan or compressor is not running, the cause is usually a failed capacitor, a burned contactor or a tripped breaker. If everything runs and the air is still warm, the coils may be dirty or iced, or the system is low on charge.

Why is my AC unit freezing up?

Ice forms on the indoor coil when too little warm air moves across it. A clogged filter, a blower running too slowly, closed registers or a dirty coil all cause it. Low charge freezes the coil too. Turn the cooling off and run the fan so the ice melts before anyone looks at it.

What causes AC capacitor to fail?

Heat and age. A capacitor sits in the outdoor unit in direct sun, and the long hot stretches of a city summer wear it down. Power surges and a fan motor that is dragging also shorten its life. A bulged or leaking capacitor is a common reason a condenser hums without starting.

Why does my AC keep turning off?

An AC that shuts off on its own is usually tripping a safety: a high pressure switch on a dirty condenser, a float switch on a full drain pan, an overheated compressor or a breaker that trips. A thermostat with weak batteries will also drop the call for cooling.

What causes AC drain line to clog?

The water that comes off the indoor coil carries dust and grows slime. Over a summer that slime builds up in the trap and the drain line until water backs into the pan. A line that is clogged once will clog again unless it is flushed and the trap is cleaned.

Why does my AC smell musty?

A musty smell comes from mold and slime growing where water sits: the drain pan, the evaporator coil or the inside of the duct near the coil. Cleaning the pan and coil and clearing the drain so water leaves the unit usually takes care of it.
